NEW HEALTH will be presented on April 14 at the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia as a project of strategic importance for Europe in the field of cross-border health cooperation, funded by the EU through the Interreg Spain–Portugal Program (POCTEP).
The conference will bring together institutional leaders, healthcare professionals, and researchers to address the major challenges of innovation, digitalization, and personalized medicine.
NEW HEALTH marks a turning point in the transformation of the healthcare system in the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion, driving a new generation of care based on artificial intelligence, data, and precision medicine.
On April 14, 2026, the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia will host the launch event for the European NEW HEALTH project, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming the healthcare system through innovation, technology, and institutional collaboration. It is led by the Santiago Health Research Institute Foundation (FIDIS) in collaboration with the Salamanca Biomedical Research Institute (IBSAL), among other institutions.
The event, which will be held in Auditorium 2 of the CINC Building, will bring together public sector officials, clinical leaders, researchers, and stakeholders from the healthcare ecosystem to present the project’s objectives, areas of focus, and key initiatives.
A Project to Transform the Healthcare System
NEW HEALTH was created with the goal of promoting a more efficient, innovative, and patient-centered healthcare model, strengthening cooperation between Galicia and Northern Portugal in key areas such as personalized medicine, the digitization of healthcare, and the integration of clinical data.
In this context, the project promotes the creation of a cross-border health innovation platform that connects hospitals, research centers, and universities, facilitating the development of advanced solutions that improve the quality of care and access to health services.
Among its main areas of focus are the application of emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence—research in oncology and cardiovascular diseases, and the promotion of collaborative governance models.
A Cross-Border Partnership for Innovation in Health
The project is led by the Galician Public Foundation for Health Research in Santiago de Compostela (FIDIS) and involves a consortium of leading organizations in the health, academic, and research sectors in Spain and Portugal, including IBSAL.
This collaboration reinforces the role of the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion as a strategic hub for healthcare innovation, promoting knowledge transfer, technological development, and improvements in health services.
Presentation Event: Innovation, Technology, and Cooperation
The NEW HEALTH launch event is designed as a forum for institutional, scientific, and strategic dialogue that will address the main challenges facing the current healthcare system, with a special focus on innovation, artificial intelligence, and interregional cooperation.
The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the official opening remarks by the rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Ms. Rosa María Crujeiras Casais, and the scientific director of the Santiago Institute for Health Research (IDIS), Ms. Mª Luz Couce Pico, accompanied by leading researchers in the fields of cardiology and oncology.
Next, the NEW HEALTH project will be presented under the title“Innovation and Transformation of the Healthcare System through New Health,” introducing its objectives, scope, and relevance in the European context.
Next, there will be a session focused on technology, data, and personalized medicine, which will address the role of artificial intelligence, medical imaging, and the advanced use of data in the evolution toward more personalized medicine, as well as advances in translational oncology.
The meeting will continue with a series of institutional presentations featuring representatives from the Xunta de Galicia, the European Commission, and the Ministry of Finance, highlighting the European cooperation framework that underpins the project.
Next, the discussion will turn to institutional collaboration in health care, highlighting the management of the health care ecosystem and coordination among organizations as a key pillar for the project’s development.
The event will be closed by the Regional Minister of Health of the Xunta de Galicia, Mr. Antonio Gómez Caamaño, and will conclude with a coffee-and-networking session designed to foster the exchange of knowledge and the creation of new opportunities for collaboration.

NEW HEALTH is a European cross-border cooperation project that aims to drive the transformation of the healthcare system in the Galicia–Northern Portugal Euroregion by promoting innovation, digitization, and collaboration among healthcare, academic, and research institutions.
The 0313-New Health project has been co-financed by the European Union through the 6th call for proposals of the Interreg VI Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2021–2027.
These operations are defined as cross-border cooperation projects that seek to achieve specific objectives set forth in the program by participating in actions that have a significant impact on the region and generate long-term, sustainable value in key areas such as innovation, climate change, and health.
