Features

The first joint transnational calls for proposals under the future BrainHealth partnership have been published.

The goal of these calls for proposals is to promote research into the biological, social, and environmental factors that influence brain health over the course of a person’s life; there are two calls for proposals.

These calls for proposals are co-financed by the European Union and involve more than 30 countries and more than 35 funding organizations.

In addition, the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) participates in these calls for proposals as the national funding agency.

Requirements

Proposals must be interdisciplinary and address at least two of the three factors listed below:

  1. Biological factors, e.g., genetics, epigenetics, -omics, neuroplasticity, inflammation, infection, synaptogenesis, neural circuits, vascular factors, sensory impairment, comorbidities.

  2. Lifestyle and social factors, e.g., exercise/physical activity, nutrition, sleep, smoking, alcohol and drug use, work (income, employment), background/socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, sex and gender, education, safety, social interactions (family/friends), access to health care, stress, trauma, migration.

  3. Environmental factors, e.g., pollution/pollutants, urbanization, disasters, pandemics, wars/conflicts, climate change, microbiota, nature.

In addition, applications must address at least two of the following aspects:

  2. Early detection, diagnosis, and prognosis are linked to the identified factors.

  3. Prevention, treatments, interventions, technological development, care, and support related to the identified factors.

Call 1: Biological, social, and environmental factors that influence the trajectory of brain health across the lifespan— in the field of neurological, mental, and sensory disorders

The objective of this call for proposals is to facilitate multinational, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research that addresses critical translational issues. Applications for this call must address how biological, social, and environmental factors influence the course of neurological, mental, and sensory disorders throughout the life course.

Call 2: Biological, social, and environmental factors that influence the trajectory of brain health across the lifespan – in the field of neurodegeneration

The objective of this call for proposals is to facilitate multinational, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research that addresses critical translational issues. Proposals submitted in response to this call must address how biological, social, and environmental factors influence the course of neurodegenerative disorders throughout the life cycle.

Important to note: You may not submit the same proposal to both calls for proposals under the EP BrainHealth program.
