Features

A joint transnational call for proposals has been published by the European Partnership for Personalized Medicine (EP PerMed), Joint Transnational Call (JTC) 2026: Personalized Medicine for Cardiovascular, Metabolic, and Kidney Diseases (CARMEN2026)

This call for proposals will fund human health research projects on innovative personalized medicine strategies for patients with cardiovascular, metabolic, or kidney diseases. Research projects may focus on a single disease or address these conditions in combination.

Research projects that combine a personalized medicine approach with care strategies targeting shared biological pathways or common underlying mechanisms of cardiovascular, metabolic, and renal diseases will be viewed favorably.

The call for proposals is co-funded by the European Union and involves 39 funding organizations from 27 countries, with a total estimated budget of over 38 million euros.

In addition, the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) is participating in this call for proposals as the national funding agency.

Requirements

Proposals should address one or more of the following aspects:

  • Development and validation of innovative, personalized therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular, metabolic, or kidney diseases through testing in relevant preclinical models (e.g., human cell cultures, organoids, organs-on-chips, disease-specific animal models, or in silico models).
  • Identification and validation of molecular markers/signatures or cutting-edge technologies (see also point 2 below) to monitor treatment response in patients with cardiovascular, metabolic, or kidney diseases in order to tailor treatment pathways. This may include the analysis of treatment effectiveness or treatment-related (including those associated with multiple medications) adverse effects, as well as dose optimization.
  • Identification and validation of stratifying molecular markers or signatures, or stratifying diagnostic technologies, for the early prediction of disease risk and the prevention of disease progression or comorbidities in patients with cardiovascular, metabolic, or kidney diseases, thereby delaying the progression to cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome.

Research projects that combine a personalized medicine approach with care strategies targeting shared biological pathways or common underlying mechanisms of cardiovascular, metabolic, and kidney diseases are welcome.

Projects funded under this call are also required to include a dedicated work package focusing on the translation or implementation of research outcomes into clinical practice, with an emphasis on, for example, patient outcomes, patient preferences, costs, reimbursement, education (for healthcare providers, patients, and citizens), ELSA (ethical, legal, and societal aspects), or accessibility at the point of care.
