Objectives
The objective of this predoctoral fellowship/contract is to complete an interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation in neuroscience and other fields of knowledge (such as human biology, bioethics, psychology, philosophy, physics, or history). Theoretical or empirical projects will be considered that propose a genuine dialogue between two or more of these disciplines, with the aim of improving our understanding of the brain, moving beyond monodisciplinary paradigms, proposing original answers to the mind-brain problem, discuss and anticipate the main ethical challenges of neuroscience, or address specific topics commonly discussed in interdisciplinary forums, such as consciousness, subjectivity, or free will. Particular consideration will be given to thesis projects that clearly and substantively align with the following lines of research:
- Cognition and Subjective Experience in Non-Clinical Contexts
- Implications of the Non-Clinical Use of Neurotechnologies for Global Health
- Sociocultural, Ethical, and Institutional Dimensions of Neurotechnology
- Differences between human intelligence and “artificial intelligence,” between the biological and the synthetic
- Studies on Consciousness
- The Relationship Between Art and Neuroscience
Duration and Funding
The initial duration of the fellowship is one year, renewable for equal periods up to a maximum of four years, subject to a satisfactory evaluation of the work plan and the submission of the corresponding progress reports.
The financial award for the fellowship will be in accordance with the provisions of Article 21 of Law 14/2011, of June 1, on Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Royal Decree 103/2019, of March 1, which approves the Statute of Pre-doctoral Research Staff in Training, consolidated text (last amended: January 11, 2023), and will consist of 33,000 euros gross annually for the first two years. In the third and fourth years, the amounts will be 35,000 and 36,000 euros gross, respectively.
The funding includes the intern’s gross pay and the Social Security contributions to be paid by the hiring entity.
For the purposes of this call for applications, a “host university or institution” is defined as the Spanish institution where the recipient will sign the pre-doctoral contract and complete their doctoral dissertation. When the research is conducted at a center other than the university where the applicant is enrolled, that center shall assume the obligations that these guidelines assign to the host university.
Applications
Applications must be submitted as a single PDF document that includes the following information:
- Thesis proposal ( maximum 4 pages). The proposal must specify the background, objectives, activities to be carried out, and timeline. It is mandatory to provide details of the funded research project(s) in which the fellow would be involved, including a commitment from the principal investigator that the necessary resources will be made available to the fellow to carry out the thesis work.
- The applicant’scomplete resume . Please specify the grade point average for both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees (calculated on a 0–10 scale), as well as the level of English proficiency and other relevant qualifications.
- Abbreviated curriculum vitae of the thesis advisor ( maximum 4 pages). Include contact information, professional details (including the employment relationship with the institution where the thesis work will be conducted), experience in supervising doctoral students, research projects funded in the last 7 years, number of six-year tenure periods, up to ten relevant publications with impact factors, and any other merits the supervisor deems appropriate to include.
- A copy of your bachelor’s or master’s degree certificate or proof that it is being processed.
- Digital copy of the complete academic transcript, including undergraduate and graduate studies
- A digital copy of both sides of the applicant‘s national ID card
- A copy of the admission or pre-admission document from the department or research center where you intend to complete your doctoral dissertation.

The deadline for submitting applications is May 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. No applications with incomplete documentation or submitted through a channel other than the one indicated in the preceding paragraph will be accepted.
The applicant may be required to submit original or certified copies of any documents the admissions committee deems appropriate regarding the information provided in the application, as well as letters of recommendation from professors or other relevant individuals who know the applicant from an academic or professional standpoint.
