Features

The Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation (HCLF) and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have joined forces to invest between $5 million and $7 million over five years in research on hairy cell leukemia (HCL).

The purpose of this collaboration is to invest a portion of these funds in research aimed at discovering novel aspects of the biology of classic HCL, understanding the distinguishing characteristics of the HCL variant (“HCLv”), and applying that knowledge in clinical practice; to translate new medical knowledge into clinical applications, test new treatments in patients through clinical trials, and use the HCL registry created by HCLF to examine long-term outcomes and their impact on quality of life.

This call for applications offers two types of grants:

Laboratory-to-Clinical Research Grants (LCRGs)

  • Projects focused on translational research, including basic research, in which therapeutic development is of particular importance.
  • Projects lasting 3 years, in which the third year is contingent upon an evaluation of the second year.
  • The maximum amount per year is $250,000, including indirect costs.

Collaborative Team Grants (CTGs)

  • Projects focused on the development and implementation of new clinical trials that can be carried out within the grant’s implementation period.
  • Funding is provided for either a single study with supporting research or several coordinated projects that contribute to significant progress in the treatment of HCL.
  • Grants with a duration of up to 4 years are funded, with a maximum amount of $625,000 per year, including indirect costs.
