The project led by José Manuel Muñoz Félix, principal investigator at IBSAL and full professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Salamanca, has been selected in the Oncology category of the fifth call for health sciences research grants.
The research aims to identify new strategies to slow the increase in metastasis associated with certain chemotherapy treatments.
The Alimerka Foundation has announced the results of the fifth edition of its call for proposals for research grants in the health sciences. In the Oncology category, the foundation will support the project led by José Manuel Muñoz Félix, principal investigator of the CARD-09 group —Therapeutic Modulation of Blood Vessels in IBSAL Pathology —and a full professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Salamanca, which aims to develop new strategies to combat the increase in metastasis associated with certain chemotherapy treatments.
The proposal, titled “Defining New Strategies to Combat the Increase in Metastasis Following Chemotherapy, ” has been selected by a committee of independent experts for its innovative nature, the strength of the research team, its high potential for clinical application, and the impact its results could have on the treatment of cancer patients.
This study aims to advance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in tumor progression and to develop strategies targeting the extracellular matrix in order to counteract this adverse effect of chemotherapy and combat treatment resistance.
José Manuel Muñoz emphasized that the support received from the Alimerka Foundation “provides a vital boost to move forward with the next phases of the project and strengthen the team’s research capacity in the search for more effective and safer cancer treatments.”
Commitment to Scientific Excellence
The fifth edition of this call for proposals received 25 submissions from 21 organizations across Spain, including hospitals, universities, and research institutes. Thirteen entries were submitted in the Oncology category, from which the research project led by José Manuel Muñoz was selected.
In addition, the Alimerka Foundation has recognized, in the nutrition category of this call for research proposals , the project led by Celia Toyos Rodríguez, a researcher at INCAR-CSIC, which focuses on monitoring malnutrition in the adult population.
About the Call for Applications
The selection of the recipient initiatives was carried out by a committee of experts with extensive experience in biomedicine, biosciences, and agri-food sciences, ensuring the independence, scientific rigor, and technical quality of the evaluation process.
With this fifth call for proposals, the Alimerka Foundation has now allocated 210,000 euros to support research groups in its immediate vicinity, thereby reinforcing its commitment to generating knowledge and supporting scientific initiatives that help address some of the major health challenges facing our society.
