This comprehensive event provided an opportunity to review the institution\u2019s major milestones alongside its three scientific directors and to outline its upcoming challenges. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/es\/\">Salamanca Biomedical Research Institute<\/a> (IBSAL) held the main event of its <strong>5th Scientific Conference<\/strong> on Wednesday, <strong>coinciding with the 15th anniversary<\/strong> of its founding. During the event, the Institute took stock of its history, which has established it as one of the leading centers for biomedical research in Spain. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official inauguration was attended by the scientific director of IBSAL, <strong>Luis Garc\u00eda Ortiz<\/strong>; the vice rector for Research at the University of Salamanca, <strong>Jos\u00e9 Miguel Mateos Roco<\/strong>; <strong>Sonia Mart\u00edn P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, Director General of Health Planning, Research, and Innovation for the Regional Government of Castile and Le\u00f3n; and <strong>Raquel Yotti \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>, PERTE Commissioner for Cutting-Edge Health at the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities <strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During their remarks, the institutional representatives all highlighted <strong>the growth IBSAL has experienced since its creation<\/strong> and its role as a driving force behind biomedical research in Salamanca and Castile and Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IBSAL&#8217;s 15 Years Through the Eyes of Its Directors<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the highlights of the day was the roundtable discussion dedicated to reviewing IBSAL\u2019s 15-year history, featuring its three scientific directors: <strong>Jes\u00fas F. San Miguel (2011\u20132013), who spearheaded the Institute\u2019s creation; Rogelio Gonz\u00e1lez Sarmiento (2013\u20132023), who was responsible for its consolidation over the course of a decade; and the current scientific director, Luis Garc\u00eda Ortiz<\/strong> <strong>(2023\u2013present).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moderated by <strong>IBSAL\u2019s deputy scientific director, \u00c1ngeles Almeida Parra,<\/strong> the discussion provided an overview of the Institute\u2019s evolution from its very beginnings. San Miguel argued that <strong>research should become a central component of hospital operations<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, <strong>Rogelio Gonz\u00e1lez Sarmiento<\/strong> emphasized that <strong>\u201cthe important thing was that IBSAL belong to everyone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luis Garc\u00eda Ortiz highlighted the completion of the <strong>new IBSAL-specific foundation<\/strong> and the strengthening of <strong>citizen participation<\/strong> in research.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roundtable concluded with a <strong>collective acknowledgment<\/strong> of those who have helped build the Institute over the past fifteen years: <strong>\u00c1ngeles Almeida and Miguel Marcos<\/strong> in its early days, and the management unit and its director, <strong>Raquel Carnicero<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cutting-Edge Healthcare and Strategic Projects<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event also included a panel discussion on the <strong>PERTE for Cutting-Edge Healthcare<\/strong>, moderated by Raquel Yotti, with the participation of <strong>Marina Poll\u00e1n Santamar\u00eda<\/strong>, Director General of the Carlos III Health Institute, and<strong> \u00c1lvaro Mu\u00f1oz Galindo,<\/strong> Director General of Quality and Infrastructure at the Castilla y Le\u00f3n Regional Health Authority.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the meeting, they analyzed the impact of these Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation in areas such as <strong>personalized precision medicine, advanced therapies, clinical trials, digital transformation, and the modernization of healthcare infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subsequently, researchers from IBSAL presented some of the most innovative projects currently underway in Salamanca as part of the \u201cSalud de Vanguardia\u201d initiative. <strong>Mar\u00eda Isidoro Garc\u00eda<\/strong> discussed the implementation of pharmacogenetics in mental and cardiovascular health; <strong>\u00c1ngeles Almeida Parra<\/strong> presented the MedPer project for the early detection of cognitive decline; <strong>Mar\u00eda D\u00edez Campelo<\/strong> outlined the UMBRELLA-SUMMA Legacy initiative on myelodysplastic syndromes; <strong>Ferm\u00edn S\u00e1nchez-Guijo<\/strong> explained the progress made by RICORS TERAV+ and the CERTERA Consortium in advanced therapies; while <strong>Fernando Mart\u00edn Lara<\/strong> presented a solution for the stabilization and preservation of biospecimens developed by the Salamanca-based company 300K Solutions. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IBSAL is committed to young talent and civic engagement<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 5th IBSAL Scientific Conference included a <strong>Pre-Doctoral Session<\/strong> and <strong>a Public Session<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first event focused on the next generation of researchers, featuring a presentation on scientific success, a roundtable discussion on career prospects after earning a Ph.D., and hands-on workshops focused on artificial intelligence, science outreach, conference presentations, and crafting academic r\u00e9sum\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens\u2019 Day, for its part, embodied IBSAL\u2019s commitment to promoting open science that is closely connected to society. The event put the spotlight on citizens and, more specifically, on civic associations. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fundaneed, AFIBROSAL, LGTB+ Iguales, ASPACE, Retina Salamanca, and ASDACE presented the outreach activities they carried out in collaboration with the institute in 2025.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, IBSAL is reinforcing its commitment to science that is more open, participatory, and connected to society.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IBSAL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Salamanca Institute for Biomedical Research (IBSAL) was established on March 21, 2011, through an agreement signed by the Department of Health of the Regional Government of Castile and Le\u00f3n and the University of Salamanca, which was joined in February 2012 by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It is one of the 36 health research institutes accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its scientific activity is organized into six areas, comprising a total of 86 research groups: Cancer (22 groups); Cardiovascular, Renal, and Respiratory (11); Neuroscience (12); Infectious, Inflammatory, and Metabolic Diseases (19); Gene and Cell Therapy and Transplants (6); and Primary Care, Public Health, and Pharmacology (16).<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For more information and contact details:<\/strong><br\/><a href=\"mailto:comunicacion@ibsal.es\"><strong>comunicacion@ibsal.es<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 5th Scientific Conference brought together young talent, cutting-edge healthcare, and citizen participation through three thematic sessions.
