Now, a multidisciplinary study led by researchers from the Biomedical Research Networking Center for Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) and the Salamanca Biomedical Research Institute (IBSAL), funded by the TV3 Marathon Foundation and the CIBERES-UCI-COVID project, provides <strong>an explanation for this phenomenon.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, published in the scientific journal <strong><em>GeroScience <\/em><\/strong>and which also involved collaboration with, among others, the Infectious Diseases unit of CIBER (CIBERINFEC), analyzed the response to SARS-CoV-2 in <strong>450 patients<\/strong> admitted to the Arnau de Vilanova and Santa Mar\u00eda de Lleida University Hospitals and the R\u00edo Hortega University Hospital in Valladolid, and validated its results in an independent cohort of<strong> 244 critically ill patients.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h4>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image.png 685w, https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduced antiviral efficacy in older adults<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results show that people <strong>over the age of 70<\/strong> developed a less effective immune response to the virus. Specifically, they produced <strong>fewer SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies<\/strong> and had <strong>reduced levels of key molecules involved in antiviral defense<\/strong>, such as granzyme A and interferon gamma. This reduced ability to respond resulted in <strong>poorer control of the virus, with higher levels of viral load in the blood.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the study found that <strong>older<\/strong> adults <strong>activated immune mechanisms that differed from those of younger adults.<\/strong> In older adults, there was greater activation of the innate immune system, along with endothelial damage and activation of the coagulation cascade.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pattern suggests that, in their attempt to control the infection, older adults <strong>developed a thrombo-inflammatory response associated with more severe clinical forms of the disease.<\/strong> As a result, mortality was significantly higher in this group: approximately 32% among those over 70 years of age, compared with 6% among younger patients.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Alejandro \u00c1lvaro-Meca, a researcher on the study at CIBERINFEC at Rey Juan Carlos I University in Madrid, <strong><em>&#8220;this biological profile was identified through the application of a machine learning model that made it possible to detect the key biomarkers associated with the response in older adults.&#8221;<\/em> <\/strong>The model was subsequently validated in an independent cohort of critically ill patients, confirming its robustness.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tamara Postigo-Casado, the study\u2019s lead author and a researcher at IBSAL, notes that <em><strong>\u201cthis study helps us understand how older adults respond to a new virus\u2014one against which they had no prior immunity\u2014and provides important insights for better protecting this population against future emerging infections.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For their part, the project\u2019s principal investigators, Jes\u00fas F. Bermejo-Mart\u00edn and David de Gonzalo\u2014researchers at CIBERES at IBSAL and IRBLleida, respectively\u2014emphasize that the availability of vaccines radically changed this scenario:<strong> <em>\u201cOnce vaccinated, older adults were better able to control the virus and prevent the development of this thrombo-inflammatory response, which significantly reduced mortality.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, Ra\u00fal L\u00f3pez-Izquierdo, the second-to-last author of the study and a researcher at R\u00edo Hortega University Hospital, highlights the collaborative model of the Spanish healthcare system: <strong><em>\u201cThis study demonstrates that cooperation between clinical and basic researchers is essential for better understanding serious infections and improving patient care.\u201d <\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>This study is part of <strong>the
