{"id":24343,"date":"2026-01-14T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/a-study-by-ibsal-and-usal-demonstrates-the-antiparasitic-properties-of-a-native-plant-against-leishmaniasis-and-chagas-disease\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T12:53:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T10:53:51","slug":"a-study-by-ibsal-and-usal-demonstrates-the-antiparasitic-properties-of-a-native-plant-against-leishmaniasis-and-chagas-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/en\/a-study-by-ibsal-and-usal-demonstrates-the-antiparasitic-properties-of-a-native-plant-against-leishmaniasis-and-chagas-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"A study by IBSAL and USAL demonstrates the antiparasitic properties of a native plant against leishmaniasis and Chagas disease"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The study, led by researcher Esther del Olmo and published in the high-impact journal *Journal of Ethnopharmacology*, reveals that compounds extracted from the blue thistle could contribute to the development of new therapies for these parasitic diseases, which have a major global impact and affect millions of people worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is the first comprehensive analysis of this plant, whose beauty inspired the researcher, who has discovered previously unknown molecules and highlights its value as a natural resource for the development of safer and more effective future drugs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/es\/\">Salamanca Institute for Biomedical Research<\/a> (IBSAL) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usal.es\/\">University of Salamanca<\/a> (USAL) has demonstrated the <strong>remarkable antiparasitic activity of <em>Eryngium bourgatii<\/em>,<\/strong> known as blue thistle or Magdalena thistle, against the parasites that cause <strong>visceral leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.<\/strong> The research, published in<em> <strong>the *Journal of Ethnopharmacology*<\/strong>,<\/em> represents the most comprehensive analysis to date of this species and opens up new possibilities for the <strong>development of future naturally derived drugs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parasitic diseases continue to pose a serious public health problem. According to the World Health Organization, <strong>between 700,000 and 1 million people contract cutaneous leishmaniasis<\/strong> annually <strong>, while approximately 70,000 are infected with visceral leishmaniasis<\/strong> (VL), the most aggressive form of the disease. If not treated promptly, VL can be fatal and causes about 30,000 deaths annually. Leishmaniasis is endemic in 98 countries and poses a risk to approximately 350 million people worldwide. Similarly, <strong>between 6 and 7 million people are infected with Chagas disease,<\/strong> which causes approximately 10,000 deaths per year. Most of those affected are in Latin America, but <strong>migration has spread the disease to other parts of the world<\/strong>, such as the United States and Europe.     <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese diseases remain a global challenge, and we need new therapeutic options,\u201d says principal investigator <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ibsal.portalinvestigacion.com\/investigadores\/236\">Esther del Olmo<\/a>, coordinator <\/strong>of the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Research Group at CIETUS at USAL and a member of the DOMOBIO (Design and Synthesis of Bioactive Molecules) at IBSAL. \u201cThe drugs currently available to treat these diseases are very old and highly toxic. Our results identify natural compounds with excellent activity that could serve as a good starting point for the development of safer and more effective molecules,\u201d she adds. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A research project that began with an unexpected discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study\u2019s origins date back to the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, when travel restrictions led Del Olmo to spend more time than usual in his hometown in northwestern Burgos. During a hike through Pe\u00f1a Amaya, a limestone landscape at an altitude of nearly 1,400 meters, the plant\u2019s beauty caught his attention. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat could something so beautiful be hiding?\u201d he recalls. \u201cMy initial goal wasn\u2019t to study the blue thistle, but its beauty made me take notice of it. When I began reviewing the literature, I realized that it hadn\u2019t been studied much, except for a few very old studies,\u201d he adds, noting further, \u201cthe studies indicated the presence of one of the compounds I was working on at the time, falcarinol, which had not been tested as an antiparasitic.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That curiosity\u2014and that coincidence\u2014led to <strong>a long-term project spanning several years<\/strong>, which included the careful collection of roots and aerial parts, the <strong>isolation of compounds using advanced chromatography techniques, and <\/strong>their evaluation against <em>Leishmania donovani, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Plasmodium falciparum\u2014the parasites <\/em>that cause leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and malaria, respectively.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197886-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197886-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197886-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197886-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197886.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Results: Activity Against Leishmaniasis and Chagas Disease<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team identified 41 natural compounds and isolated and purified 13 of them <strong>,<\/strong> including several <strong>falcarinol-type<\/strong> polyacetylenes known for their bioactive potential. Of particular note is the isolation of a compound identified as <strong>furanone 12,<\/strong> which is very abundant in the roots and whose chemical structure was corrected based on the only reference publications, which date back to the 1970s. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have identified compounds that had not been described before and corrected the structure of a molecule that had been reported incorrectly for decades. From a <strong>chemical<\/strong> standpoint<strong>, this study is also very important<\/strong>,<strong>\u201d<\/strong> explains Del Olmo. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>in vitro<\/em> assays, extracts and fractions of the plant showed a <strong>high inhibitory capacity against <em>L. donovani<\/em> and <em>T. cruzi<\/em><\/strong>, while activity against malaria was low. Some compounds, such as furanone 12 and falcarinol, showed potency comparable to reference drugs for leishmaniasis and significant activity against Chagas disease. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the laboratory results, the study also represents <strong>a significant advance in our understanding of <em>Eryngium bourgatii<\/em>,<\/strong> a species that has been scarcely studied from a scientific perspective. Del Olmo notes that, although there are isolated ethnobotanical references <strong>\u2014\u201cin Catalonia, the roots are used in decoctions to purify the blood and as an antidote for snake bites, and in northern Morocco, they are used to alleviate postpartum symptoms, while the aerial parts are used in decoctions to treat digestive disorders\u201d<\/strong>\u2014the plant had not been studied in depth or subjected to antiparasitic trials. In fact, in Castile and Le\u00f3n\u2014the region where the blue thistle studied in this research was collected\u2014its presence is associated almost exclusively with <strong>ornamental and decorative uses.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"739\" height=\"739\" src=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197878-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197878-edited.jpg 739w, https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197878-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ibsal.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1000197878-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 739px) 100vw, 739px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A long history and a well-established international partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research benefited from international collaboration with <strong>Panama\u2019s Institute for Scientific Research and High-Tech Services<\/strong>( <strong>INDICASAT-AIP),<\/strong> where the antiparasitic trials were conducted. \u201cI have been collaborating with colleagues in Panama for nearly two decades, and specifically with researchers at INDICASAT for the past 8 years. This type of research offers new alternatives and helps us better understand what our biodiversity has to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although these are preliminary results, the researcher believes they represent an important step toward new therapeutic strategies: \u201cThe experiments are <em>in vitro<\/em>; the next step would be studies in animal models. It\u2019s not easy, but it\u2019s <strong>a promising start<\/strong>.
