{"id":24225,"date":"2026-03-11T08:39:47","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/gilead-grant-for-an-ibsal-project-to-detect-silent-liver-diseases-early\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T12:54:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T10:54:22","slug":"gilead-grant-for-an-ibsal-project-to-detect-silent-liver-diseases-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/en\/gilead-grant-for-an-ibsal-project-to-detect-silent-liver-diseases-early\/","title":{"rendered":"Gilead Grant for an IBSAL Project to Detect Silent Liver Diseases Early"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The HepACTIVA project, led by Jes\u00fas Manuel Gonz\u00e1lez Santiago, a researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Research in Salamanca, was one of the winners of the eighth call for proposals for the \u201cGilead Grants for Projects on Micro-Elimination of Hepatitis C and Diagnosis and Referral to the National Health System for Patients with Hepatitis D.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the <strong>51st National Congress of the Spanish Association for the Study of the Liver (AEEH)<\/strong>, held on February 18, 19, and 20, 2026, the Gilead Grants for Projects on the Eradication of Hepatitis C and for Diagnosis and Referral to the National Health System for Patients with Hepatitis D were announced. This eighth edition will enable research teams from across the country to advance initiatives aimed at <strong>improving the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of liver diseases, with a direct and tangible impact on patients<\/strong> and society as a whole.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the selected projects <strong>, HepACTIVA<\/strong> stands out <strong>\u2014a project coordinated from Castilla y Le\u00f3n that aims to address a growing public health problem: liver diseases<\/strong> associated with hepatic steatosis (fat accumulation in the liver)\u2014especially in people with risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, or high blood pressure\u2014as well as alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis or autoimmune diseases. These conditions can progress silently for years through a process of persistent inflammation that leads to fibrosis (progressive scarring of the liver). As this scarring progresses, it can lead to liver cirrhosis, a condition in which the liver progressively loses its functional capacity and the risk of developing liver cancer increases if it is not detected and treated in time.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Hepatology Unit of the <\/strong>Gastroenterology Department at the <strong>Salamanca University Healthcare Complex (CAUSA)<\/strong>, in close collaboration with Primary Care, the Clinical Laboratory, Microbiology, and Preventive Medicine departments, is leading this innovative project alongside the <strong>Salamanca Institute for Biomedical Research (IBSAL).<\/strong> The multidisciplinary team, led by principal investigator Jes\u00fas Manuel Gonz\u00e1lez Santiago, has expanded the initiative to eight areas and centers in the region \u2014Segovia, Burgos, \u00c1vila, Ponferrada, Soria, Palencia, and Aranda de Duero\u2014with the goal of <strong>early detection of prevalent but undiagnosed liver diseases<\/strong>, following the recommendations of the leading European scientific societies.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Organizational and Technological Innovation with a Preventive Impact<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HepACTIVA project <strong>focuses on the prevention of liver diseases that often go unnoticed for years because they do not cause symptoms in the early stages.<\/strong> This approach aims to detect liver fibrosis and chronic viral hepatitis early on, in order to prevent them from progressing to cirrhosis and more serious complications. To this end, the model incorporates <strong>an automated system that <\/strong>combines laboratory test results with noninvasive elastography techniques, along with structured referral and follow-up pathways that allow <strong>for intervention while the disease is still potentially reversible.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HepACTIVA is not starting from scratch: the project aims to consolidate and <strong>scale up to the regional level the clinical and organizational work carried out over the past three years in the Salamanca area<\/strong>, extending it to these eight centers that have implemented this same strategy. The funding obtained will make it possible to expand the model and evaluate its impact more accurately, generating results that will allow for an assessment of its <strong>effectiveness and sustainability<\/strong> and that will support the program\u2019s continuation. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This IBSAL research group emphasizes that making progress in the early detection of liver fibrosis is key to <strong>improving health and reducing the burden of chronic liver disease in Castilla y Le\u00f3n<\/strong>. The proposed approach addresses both established liver damage and its modifiable causes\u2014such as optimizing metabolic control, reducing alcohol consumption, or antiviral treatment\u2014through a
