{"id":14476,"date":"2025-09-18T10:59:22","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T10:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/?p=14476"},"modified":"2026-08-04T12:51:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T10:51:50","slug":"pioneering-trial-to-treat-relapsed-multiple-myeloma-patients-with-a-novel-academic-car-t-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibsal.es\/en\/pioneering-trial-to-treat-relapsed-multiple-myeloma-patients-with-a-novel-academic-car-t-2\/","title":{"rendered":"IBSAL and USAL are making progress in the study of cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and highly aggressive form of liver cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The HEVEPHARM group, affiliated with IBSAL and led by Professor Jos\u00e9 Juan Garc\u00eda Mar\u00edn, is part of the international research consortium headed by CIC bioGUNE at the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The journal <em>*Gut* has published <\/em>the finding, which suggests that inhibiting the CNNM4 protein in combination with GalNAc siRNA technology opens up new avenues for personalized therapies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA)<\/strong> is a rare, <strong>highly aggressive<\/strong> type of <strong>liver cancer<\/strong> that is often diagnosed late and has very limited treatment options.<strong> Only 20\u201330% of those affected are eligible for surgery<\/strong>, and <strong>survival rates remain low<\/strong> even after complete removal of the tumor. This urgent clinical challenge is motivating the scientific community to explore new strategies for managing the disease.  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, <strong>the research group at <a href=\"http:\/\/ibsal.es\/en\/\">the Institute of Biomedical Research of Salamanca<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usal.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Salamanca (USAL)<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ibsal.portalinvestigacion.com\/grupos\/49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called \u201cExperimental Hepatology and Drug Delivery\u201d (HEVEPHARM\/IBSAL\/CIBEREHD)<\/a><\/strong>, led by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/ibsal.portalinvestigacion.com\/investigadores\/181\">Jos\u00e9 Juan Garc\u00eda Mar\u00edn<\/a>, is part of the international team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cicbiogune.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CIC bioGUNE<\/a> at the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park, which <strong>has identified a new therapeutic target for cholangiocarcinoma<\/strong> and paved the way for the development of safe and effective personalized therapies.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, which was just published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/gut.bmj.com\/\"><em>Gut<\/em><\/a> reveals that the CNNM4 protein, which is responsible for transporting magnesium into cells, is produced in excess and continuously in cholangiocarcinoma. <strong>By blocking CNNM4, the research consortium was able to slow tumor growth, reduce resistance to chemotherapy, and prevent the spread of tumor cells<\/strong>. In addition, restoring magnesium balance triggered ferroptosis, a natural process that selectively eliminates cancer cells while increasing their sensitivity to treatment. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deciphering the CNNM4 Gene and Protein<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, <strong>HEVEPHARM was responsible for analyzing, using various techniques, the gene and protein expression levels in samples from patients with biliary tract cancer or cholangiocarcinoma involving the gene on which the study is based<\/strong>. \u201cThis gene, called CNNM4, encodes a protein involved in magnesium transport in healthy cells, a process that appears to be altered in tumor cells,\u201d Garc\u00eda Mar\u00edn told <a href=\"https:\/\/saladeprensa.usal.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USAL Communications<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results obtained by the USAL research group have shown that \u201cthis alteration may be due to <strong>abnormally elevated expression of the CNNM4 protein<\/strong>, which is a common feature in the cholangiocarcinomas examined,\u201d the professor emphasizes. As a result, the protein has been considered \u201can attractive therapeutic target for the development of strategies aimed at combating this tumor, for which\u2014when it is inoperable\u2014there is currently no effective treatment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Precision Medicine and New Therapies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, led by Malu Mart\u00ednez-Chantar, principal investigator at CIC bioGUNE and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciberehd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the National Biomedical Research Network for the Study of Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD)<\/a> <strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/strong>with scientists Naroa Goikoetxea and Mar\u00eda Mercado as co-first<strong>authors\u2014<\/strong> has been highlighted with a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/gut.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2025\/08\/05\/gutjnl-2025-335061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">editorial<\/a> in <em>*Gut<\/em>*. It integrates and coordinates the biosanitary research carried out at the University Hospital of Salamanca, the Primary Care Management of Salamanca and the biosanitary area of the University of
