SUMMARY:AES 2026 - Health Research Projects 2026
DESCRIPTION:Purpose\nCall for proposals for funding R&D&I projects in the health sector\, as the primary source of support for research conducted within the National Health System (SNS) and at research centers affiliated with it. \nFunding will be provided for projects of proven quality whose main objectives are: \n\nThe transfer and application of scientific and technical knowledge to improve the prevention\, diagnosis\, and treatment of diseases\, as well as to support public health promotion activities and health services.\nTo foster synergies\, promote talent and employability\, and strengthen the governance structures that bring together the scientific and technical capabilities of the National Health System’s (SNS) healthcare centers.\nTo encourage young researchers to contribute to knowledge generation by leading their first research project through a competitive public call for proposals.\n\nThe following types of projects may be submitted: \n\nIndividual projects: submitted by an applicant organization and to be carried out by a research team led by one or two principal investigators (PI and Co-PI).\nCoordinated projects: consisting of two or more subprojects\, which must adequately justify in the proposal the need for such coordination to address the proposed objectives\, as well as the expected benefits of the coordination. Each subproject will have its own team and will be led by one or two principal investigators (PI and Co-PI). One of the projects will act as the coordinator\, and its PI—or both PIs\, if applicable—will be responsible for the project’s implementation. Coordinated projects may be converted ex officio into individual projects if coordination is deemed unnecessary. \nMulticenter projects: conducted according to a single protocol at more than one site. In this type of project\, one of the following options may be chosen:\n\nMulticenter study with a single grant-receiving institution: Submit a single application for the institution affiliated with the person or persons serving as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)\, who will act as coordinators\, with all collaborating researchers listed as part of the same team\, regardless of the institution from which they participate.\nMulticenter study with multiple participating centers: Submit one application for each participating center\, with one or two principal investigators as appropriate and one research team per application submitted. One of the projects will serve as the coordinator and will be responsible for scientific coordination and project monitoring. \n\n\n\n  \nRequirements\nRequirements for applicants: \n\n\n\n\n\nThe following legal entities\, provided they conduct or manage R&D&I activities in biomedicine or in health sciences and technologies: \n\nHealth research institutes accredited by ministerial order (IIS).\nPublic health entities and institutions with clinical assistance activities.\nPublic health entities and institutions without a health activity license\, but with demonstrable R+D+I activity in the area of knowledge of Public Health.\nPrivate healthcare entities and institutions that are licensed to provide healthcare services and are affiliated with or have agreements with the National Health System (SNS).\nThe OPIs (Public Research Organizations).\nPublic universities and private universities with proven R&D capacity and activity.\nState-level technology centers and state-level centers for supporting technological innovation that are registered in the Registry of Centers established by Royal Decree 2093/2008\nOther public R&D\, research and knowledge dissemination centers and research infrastructures\, with their own legal personality\, linked to or dependent on the General State Administration or the rest of the Public Administrations and their agencies.\nPublic and private non-profit entities that carry out and/or manage R&D activities\, generate scientific or technological knowledge or facilitate its application and transfer.\nPublic consortia and state public consortia with R&D&I activities in Biomedicine or Health Sciences and Technologies.\nOther health administration units.\n\nWhen the project’s development so requires\, companies or other public or private entities interested in the project’s development and outcomes may be involved\, provided that such participation does not entail any form of direct assistance to them from the grants that may be awarded under this call for proposals. \n\nPI requirements:\n\n\nHold a Ph.D.\nBe a member of the staff of the applicant organization\, as listed above\, and have maintained a civil service\, statutory\, or employment relationship with that organization for at least the entire period between the application deadline and the final decision on the grant.\nNot currently participating in an FSE program.\n\n  \nFor individual\, coordinated\, or multicenter projects\, each application may be submitted by one or two principal investigators (PI and co-PI). In this case\, both principal investigators must be on the staff of the applying institution\, and in the case of IISs\, both principal investigators must be affiliated with that IIS\, acting as the point of contact for all purposes (applications submitted by CIBERs are exempt from this requirement). The Co-PI must meet the same requirements and conflict-of-interest rules that apply to PIs and will receive the same academic recognition. \nSpecial consideration will be given to projects led by two principal investigators who indicate in their application report their intention to initiate a leadership transition process\, with one being a senior researcher and the other a young researcher. In these projects\, the co-PI will be the senior researcher\, while the PI will be the person to whom the transition is being made. This transition period shall never exceed two consecutive projects\, and the application report must explicitly state that this limit will not be exceeded. \n\nRequirements for Researchers\n\nThe remaining members of the research team must: \n\nHave a formal civil service\, statutory\, employment\, or paid training relationship with any of the entities eligible to apply for this program for at least the entire period between the deadline for submitting applications and the date of the award decision.\nThe expectation of being appointed or hired by the beneficiary entity as a result of having successfully completed a competitive public recruitment process shall be considered sufficient grounds for affiliation.\nIn exceptional cases\, when their contribution is deemed necessary for the viability of the project\, research teams may include personnel who are contractually affiliated with entities not headquartered in Spain (provided such entities are eligible under this call for proposals\, as indicated in the previous section)\, and such personnel may constitute up to 25% of the research team.\n\n  \n\n\nApplication\nThe form of presentation of the application and other documentation will be exclusively through the ISCIII’s electronic headquarters. \nThe application forms will require only the signature of the legal representative of the applicant entity\, who will collect the signatures of the other interested parties and be responsible for their safekeeping and authenticity. \nApplications must be accompanied by the following documentation: \nThey are an integral part of the application and cannot be amended at a later date: \n\nApplication form.\nResearch project report in Spanish or English\, using exclusively the standardized template corresponding to AES 2026.\nAbbreviated Curriculum Vitae (CVA-ISCIII) in Spanish or English\, automatically generated using the FECYT CVN editor or by any institution certified under the FECYT CVN standard that offers the CVA-ISCIII service\, for the principal investigator(s).\nA doctoral degree or certificate issued by a university\, bearing a verifiable signature\, that expressly states the date the doctoral degree was awarded.\n\nFor coordinated\, multicenter projects involving multiple participating centers\, a complete application must be submitted for each subproject. \nIn addition\, applications must be accompanied by (documentation that can be corrected): \n\nAbbreviated Curriculum Vitae (CVA) in Spanish or English\, automatically generated using the FECYT curriculum editor or by any institution certified under the FECYT CVN standard that offers the CVA-ISCIII service\, for the remaining members of the research team.\nFor coordinated\, multicenter projects involving multiple participating centers\, the standard coordination report must also be completed.
